How We Evaluate Garage Technology
We evaluate products against criteria that affect real ownership, not a single generic score.
Sources
Research may use manufacturer specifications, manuals, support documentation, retailer listings, warranty information and patterns in verified-owner feedback. Sources are cross-checked when details conflict.
Core evaluation criteria
- Vehicle and protocol coverage: model years, makes, systems, OBD protocols, OEM functions and documented exclusions.
- Diagnostic capability: code access, live data, active tests, adaptations, coding, topology and guided procedures.
- Accuracy and workflow: measurement range, refresh rate, interface clarity, report handling and practical setup.
- Safety and physical fit: electrical protection, load ratings, shop requirements, clearances and documented use limits.
- Ownership: updates, subscriptions, warranty, support, parts, accessories and long-term value.
What our language means
We claim hands-on testing only when an article explicitly documents it. Otherwise, conclusions are research-based and written to distinguish published facts from editorial judgment.
